Liberal Arts: Human Services (AA)

Division of Business & Professional Studies

The Human Services program combines courses in social sciences, primarily psychology and sociology, with seminars and field work in the human and social services field. In addition to obtaining the necessary professional skills such as interviewing, report writing, behavior modification, and human relations, students gain a broad background in the liberal arts. Upon graduation, students are prepared to work in a variety of social agencies related to their educational credentials and work experience.

Upon successful completion, the Associate in Arts Degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Human Services is awarded.

Program Requirements

CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and SORI (Sexual Offender Registry Information) background checks are required prior to practicum placement and will be conducted by the practicum location in accordance with state regulations. CORI and SORI results are confidential

* Course to be taken first semester.

** Students simultaneously enrolled in the Direct Support Certificate should take SO 224  and SO 120  as Program Electives. Students simultaneously enrolled in the Substance Abuse Certificate should take SW 203  and PS 253  as Program Electives.

Language Elective:


Any college level language course, including American Sign Language.

Math Electives:


Any 100-level Mathematics or higher (not MAC).

Program Electives:


Any Social Welfare (SW), Psychology (PS) or Sociology (SO) course.

Graduation Competency


Quantitative skills is a MassBay graduation competency for associate degree programs. Prior to graduation, students must demonstrate this competency by completing a 100-level math course (not MAC); or placing into a 200-level mathematics course.
