LI 210 QUEER LITERATURE

Queer literature centers the lived experiences, voices, and representation of LGBTQIA+ and indigenous two-spirit individuals and communities. This course will introduce students to queer theory as a mode of analysis to deconstruct dominant literary narratives and subvert heteronormative constructs of gender identity and sexual orientation. Throughout the course, we will not only explore diverse queer
voices, but will also put queer theory in conversation with other literary texts, highlighting historical and cultural tendencies to exclude, ignore, or erase queer identities and/or themes. Topics covered may include subversion, isolation, deviance, transgression, performativity, coming out, and
redefining family. Emphasis will be given to ways in which queer theory frames identity as fluid and inherently intersectional, highlighting the complexities of the interplay of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, ability, and culture. 3 Credits Prerequisites: EN 101 . Completion of EN 102  or LI 200  recommended.
